How to Get Engaged

How to Get Engaged

What an engagement ring actually is

An engagement ring is not a piece of jewellery. Not really. It is a declaration. The most public, permanent and personal declaration one person can make to another.

Every time someone glances at that ring, they understand everything without a word being said. This person is loved. This person has chosen and been chosen. This person’s life changed, for the better, at a specific moment they will remember for the rest of their days.

That is what the ring carries. Not a diamond. Not a gold band. A moment, made permanent.

We have been selling engagement rings for twenty-two years. In that time, we have been asked to change or exchange a ring after the proposal only a handful of times. Not because the ring was wrong. Because the moment was right.

A ring chosen with love and genuine effort almost never gets changed, even when the person wearing it might have chosen something slightly different for themselves. Because the yes is never to the ring. The yes is to you.

So before anything else, we want to say this clearly: do not overthink the ring. The ring is the signifier of the moment. Get the moment right, and the ring will be exactly right.

The decision

There is a moment, before any ring is chosen or any question is planned, when you simply know. You know this is the person. You know this is the time. Everything that follows, the ring, the proposal, the celebration, flows from that moment of certainty.

If you are reading this guide, you have probably already had that moment. What comes next is making sure everything around it does justice to how you feel.

Start by giving yourself permission to enjoy this. The time between deciding to ask and actually asking is one of the most quietly joyful stretches of anyone’s life. You are carrying a wonderful secret. There is no need to rush it.

Think about them first, not the ring

Before you set foot in a jewellery shop, spend some time thinking about the person you are buying for. This sounds obvious, but it is the step most people skip in their eagerness to get to the choosing.

Look at the jewellery they already wear. Is it yellow gold or white metal? Delicate and understated, or bold and expressive? Do they wear a lot of it, or almost none? Do they follow fashion, or do they have an entirely personal sense of style?

Think about how they live. Do they work with their hands, and need a ring that can keep up with an active life? Or is theirs the kind of life where something more elaborate would be at home every day?

Think about what they have noticed. Have they stopped in front of a window? Pointed something out in a magazine? Mentioned a friend’s ring? People in relationships tend to drop these hints more than they realise, and partners tend to notice them less than they think.

The best engagement ring is not the most expensive one, or the most fashionable one. It is the one that makes the person you love feel completely, unmistakably understood.

When you come to us, tell us about them. Not just what you are looking for in a ring, but who they are. That conversation is where the right ring begins.

Do they know it is coming?

This is worth thinking about carefully, because it shapes everything from the ring to the proposal itself.

Some couples talk about getting engaged openly, and the proposal becomes a beautiful formality, the public celebration of a decision already made together. In that case, your partner may have opinions about the ring: a style they love, a shape they have always imagined. That information is a gift. Use it.

Other proposals are a complete surprise, and the ring must do all the talking on its own. Then everything you know about their taste, their style and what makes them feel most themselves becomes the brief.

Both approaches are completely right. There is no single correct way to ask. What matters is that the approach you choose feels true to who you both are.

Choosing the ring

Once you have spent time thinking about the person you love, the ring conversation becomes considerably easier. You are no longer choosing from thousands of options. You are narrowing towards something specific, something that reflects a real person with a real personality.

At Marmalade we will always start by asking about them, not about the ring. We will ask about their style, their life, their taste. We will ask whether they know the proposal is coming. We will ask what has caught their eye, if you know. And from that conversation, a direction will emerge that neither of us could have found by looking at a catalogue.

We carry a carefully chosen range of engagement rings in store, all made in 18 carat gold or platinum, all set with natural diamonds. Many clients find something they love on their first visit and leave the same day. Others prefer to start from a blank page and create something entirely their own.

The important thing to know is that at Marmalade, bespoke does not mean more expensive. We make our stock rings in exactly the same way we make bespoke commissions. The difference is the starting point, not the price. A bespoke ring simply begins with the person you love, rather than with something already made.

Whatever they would love, we can make. And if you have no idea where to start, that is completely fine. Not knowing is a perfectly good place to begin.

The proposal itself

This is the part that will be retold at every dinner party, every anniversary, every family gathering for the rest of your lives. It deserves as much thought as the ring, possibly more.

Think about what they would love, not what looks impressive from the outside. Some people want the grand gesture, the crowded restaurant, the moment witnessed by strangers who burst into applause. Others would find that their idea of a nightmare, and would infinitely prefer a quiet evening at home, or a walk somewhere that means something to you both.

Think about the setting. Somewhere familiar and meaningful, or somewhere entirely new? A place you have been together before, or somewhere they have always wanted to go? There is no right answer. There is only the answer that is right for them.

Think about the timing. Morning or evening? An ordinary weekday, when the surprise is complete, or a day that already feels significant? A birthday, an anniversary, a day that will now carry double meaning forever?

And think about the space afterwards. One of the things people most often overlook is that the moment of the proposal needs breathing room. Do not fill the hour after with plans and people and noise. Give yourselves time to sit in it together, just the two of you, before the rest of the world finds out. That quiet space between the question and the celebration is one of the most precious things you can give each other.

The ring tells the world. The moment tells them.

The ring that does not fit perfectly

Almost every engagement ring needs sizing after the proposal. This is completely normal and nothing to worry about.

Guessing a ring size accurately is nearly impossible, and a ring sized in advance will almost always need adjusting once the ring and the finger are finally together. We recommend proposing with the ring as it is, then bringing it back to us so we can size it properly. One adjustment, done right, and it will fit perfectly for life.

If you can find out their size before the proposal, we will take responsibility for getting it right. If not, resizing is a straightforward part of our service and is included as standard. Either way, do not let the sizing question be the reason you hesitate.

After the yes

Tell people in the order that matters. Both your families, and the people who were hoping for this. Let the news travel at a human pace before it goes anywhere near social media. The people who love you both deserve to hear it from you directly, and in the right order.

And once the celebrations have settled, come back and see us. The engagement ring is the beginning of a jewellery story that will unfold over a lifetime: the wedding bands, the anniversary pieces, the jewellery made to mark the moments that come after this one. We would love to be part of all of it.

That is, after all, what we do. We make jewellery for life.

The person you are about to ask is going to say yes because of you, not because of the ring. Choose something you believe they will love, from a jeweller you trust, and then focus on the moment. That is the part that lasts forever.
