Who is Marmalade

Our Journey

Twenty-two years on the same street. It started long before that.

The story of Marmalade begins not in Chiswick, but at a market stall in Camden, sometime in the early 1980s, with a school nurse, two young boys, and a bag of silver jewellery from Nepal.

Where It All Began

Susan (My mum) was working as a school nurse when uncle Darcy began making trips back from Kathmandu. He had settled in Nepal, fallen in love with the country and its people, and built a life there. When he visited England, he brought things to sell, handcrafts, incense, fabrics. Eventually he settled on what made most sense: the highest value, the lowest volume. Silver jewellery, made in India and Nepal.

They started selling it at Camden Market on weekends, with myself and my Brother. I think I was roughly ten or eleven years old. 

It turned out that two days at a market stall paid better than a week of nursing so mum left her job. The market stall became a business. The business became a shop in Chiswick. The shop became four shops.

The Transition

I went to university, graduated in 1995, and went to work for my mother. By then, the uncle who had started it all had built something remarkable of his own. At his peak, he employed over three hundred craftspeople making silver jewellery in Nepal and, for many years, was one of the kingdom's largest exporter of silver jewellery. The modest Camden market stall had roots that ran deep.

When Mum retired, my wife, Nadine Meegan, and I bought the business from her. It was 2003. We sat down one evening, opened a bottle of wine, and decided they were going to try something different. Gold. Diamonds. A new name.

Several bottles later, one of us said a word. Neither remembers who. We wrote it down, went to bed, and in the morning it was still there on the piece of paper.

Marmalade Fine Jewellery opened at 23 Turnham Green Terrace in 2004. I brought a gemmology qualification, a diamond grading certificate, and twenty years of knowing how jewellery works. Nadine brought an eye for design and a way with people that clients recognised immediately.

We have not moved. We have not changed what we believe. We have grown into a team of seven people who share the same values, with a loyal customer base of more than 3,000 regulars who bring their children and trust Marmalade with the pieces that matter most.

I have previously served for two years as Chairman of the National Association of Jewellers and am a former Fellow of the Institute of Registered Valuers. But the thing clients mention most, when they write to say thank you, is rarely the credentials. It is the feeling of being genuinely listened to.
