May Trivia by Sonia:

This month will see crowds flooding the gates of Chelsea Flower Show, which is between the 19th and 23rd of May . The beautiful gardens and exotic flowers draw people from all backgrounds and ages to delight in the oasis of calm and beauty created throughout the show. Flowers have always been a part of natural beauty that has been admired by all civilizations around the world, including the UK where floral motifs are often used as strong symbols: for example symbols of power such as the heraldic badges of the House of York and Lancaster, or of compassion such as the Marie Curie daffodil, or of remembrance and hope such as the Poppy Appeal.

In jewellery as well, floral motifs have been a prominent design throughout the ages. In particular during the “naturalistic era” of Victorian jewellery where designs were abundantly decorated with clearly recognisable flowers and fruit.

By the 1850s increasingly extravagant floral and foliage designs led to my personal favourite creation the ‘entremblant’ setting style, which led to floral heads quivering with the wearer’s every movement. This enabled it to catch the light and sparkle ever more than before and symbolised the gentle quivering of delicate flowers in the wind.
